Debra Ellen Kaiwhakaahua Discuss a portrait

Art portrait photography

A portrait should feel like you, not a performance.

Art-led portrait sessions for people who want more than a polished likeness. Together, we create photographs with atmosphere, character and a story that feels genuinely yours.

Portraiture with feeling

Less posing. More presence.

You do not need to arrive knowing what to do in front of the camera. We begin with a conversation about who you are, what matters to you and how you want the photographs to feel.

The setting, light, clothing and movement all become part of the story. The result might be quiet, bold, cinematic or beautifully unconventional, but it should always feel recognisably like you.

These are portraits made to hold meaning: for yourself, for the people who know you, or for a creative project that needs a human story at its centre.

01

Begin with you

Your personality, story and ideas shape the direction before the camera comes out.

02

Create the atmosphere

Location, light and movement are chosen to support the feeling rather than simply fill the frame.

03

Make something lasting

The finished photographs are selected for expression and emotional pull, not for looking overly perfected.

How a session takes shape

01

Conversation

Tell me who the portrait is for, what you want it to say and any ideas already taking shape.

02

Direction

We agree on the mood, location, styling and practical details before the session.

03

Create

The session is gently directed, with space for natural moments and unexpected ideas.

04

Choose

You receive a considered selection of finished portraits, with the final format agreed in advance.

“The strongest portrait is not always the one where everything is perfect. It is the one that feels true.”

Portrait questions

I feel awkward in front of a camera. Is that a problem?

Not at all. You will be guided throughout the session, and we will build the idea around what feels natural to you rather than relying on stiff poses.

Where can the portrait session take place?

The location is part of the creative planning. It may be outdoors, at your place or somewhere chosen for its connection to your story. Travel can be discussed when we plan the session.

Can I bring an idea or meaningful object?

Yes. A vehicle, garment, place, keepsake or creative reference can give a portrait its emotional centre. Bring the idea, even if it is not fully formed yet.

What will I receive?

The number of finished photographs, delivery format, personal usage and any print options will be clearly agreed before you book.

Begin with an idea

Tell me how you want the portrait to feel.

Share who the portrait is for, what you would love it to express, your preferred timing and where you are based. I’ll reply with the clearest next step.
